Description
Pende/Eastern Pende (Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central Africa)Gipogo helmet mask
Wood and pigment
Height: 12 inches
Masks of the Eastern Pende are characterized by geometric forms and bold polychrome; the red, white and black colors of this carving are very typical. This Gipogo, in classic style, consists of a cylindrical central form with protruding nose and ears. The shelf-like bottom element represents a beard, whose triangular surface design is typical. An abundance of fibers were once affixed to the bottom of this mask in order to conceal the wearer. A well-used headpiece, as evidenced by the meaningful wear and surface damage on the "inside."
The Gipogo masqueraders are part of a chief's treasury. They embody ancestral forces and serve as intermediaries with the spirit world. The Gipogo masker performs during healing and nurturing rituals.
PROVENANCE:
Benjamin Bernstein collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
