TAR PIT SABER CAT SKULL CAST
Smilodon fatalis
Pleistocene
Rancho La Brea Formation, California

The epitome of North American fossils, the Smilodon is the Official State Fossil of California and one of the most sought-after of all fossils. Unfortunately, most collectors will never get the opportunity to own one of these specimens due to scarcity of the fossils or the extreme expense associated with getting one. The next best thing, however, is a museum-quality cast such as the present example. The great appeal of these Ice Age predators was, of course, their amazing teeth. The evolution of these exaggerated, elongated canines is seen only in the Smilodon and a few other large, extinct Felidae (true cat) family members. The Smilodon is the leader of them all. The teeth would have been fragile appendages, but it is now theorized that rather than stabbing or ripping, these animals would have wielded them in fact more like actual sabers, using them to slash at their prey, presumably to make a quick strike at the windpipe or jugular vein. This spectacular cast was made from an unusually large and fine specimen from the famed La Brea Tar Pit Formation of southern California. Featuring superb bone texture, it was finished with a dramatic patina of dark wooden brown and black. The ivory white teeth provide a striking contrast to the impressive sabers, each over 6 inches long! The replica mounts on an included custom plexiglas stand. Measurements: 13.5 x 13.5 x 8 inches (34.29 x 34.29 x 20.32 cm).
