Jeff Segler's Boy Scout Fieldbook cover captures the adventurous spirit and physical vitality at the heart of Scouting. Commissioned for the 1984 edition of the official Boy Scouts of America Fieldbook, the painting showcases a confident Scout striding forward, oak leaf and staff in hand-a symbol of readiness, strength, and environmental stewardship.
Around him, a dynamic collage of outdoor activities-rappelling, skiing, cycling, and whitewater paddling-emerges in bold silhouette and layered motion, emphasizing Scouting's wide-ranging, hands-on curriculum. Segler, a New Mexico-based painter known for his Western and historical subjects, brings clarity, energy, and a touch of modern graphic design to the work, setting it apart from more traditional Scouting art.
With its vibrant palette and action-driven layout, the composition mirrors the Fieldbook's function: a practical, inspiring guide for youth in pursuit of challenge, leadership, and personal growth. It's an emblem of Scouting in motion-resilient, capable, and future-facing.
