Description
Pendant: Standing DeityVeraguas, Chiriquí, or Diquís
A.D. 700 - 1500
Gold, Weight 66.6 grams
Height 3 3/8 in. Width 3 3/16 in.
The frontal format of this pendant preserves considerable symmetry: the flanged headdress balances the broad, long-oval flange on which the deity stands; the upside-down profile animal heads at the lower parts of the headdress correspond to upright profile heads flanking the figure's spread legs; and the squared-off shoulders and rounded elbows create a central balancing area which complements forms immediately above and below. When seen from above, the flattened zoomorphic head is formed by banded strips crossing an open area. Bulging eyes, a curled nose, and full-toothed mouth give an alert but surprisingly benign expression to the male deity, which holds a coiled plant in each hand. Curls beside the head with open ear loops below, a banded necklace, and a several strand waistband complete the image. The condition is very good.
The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.
Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
