Description

MASSIVE GIANT CLAM SHELL
Tridacna gigas
South Pacific

The giant clam, Tridacna gigas, or traditionally, pa'ua, is the largest living bivalve mollusk. They have an average life span in the wild of 100 years or more. Sessile in adulthood, the creature's mantle tissues act as a habitat for the symbiotic single-celled algae from which it gets its nutrition. By day, the clam spreads out its mantle tissue so that the algae receive the sunlight they need to photosynthesize. It's quite rare to obtain both halves (a matched pair), and at 3 feet across and weighing over 300 pounds, the present specimen is near the maximum for the species.
