Inscribed upper right: DUDLEY EARL OF / LEICESTER
Inscribed and dated upper left: AETA[TIS] SVÆ: 30 / 1612
Robert Dudley (1532-1588) served as 1st Earl of Leicester, a titled granted to him by Queen Elizabeth I, from 1564 until his death.
Condition Report*:
Lined canvas. Lower right corner of canvas is lifting where laid down. Minor frame abrasion at edges. Finely patterned craquelure throughout. Mild surface dust. Visible retouching which varies in surface texture. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: very heavily applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly, somewhat obscuring the picture surface. Dots and dashes of retouching to the background, some affecting the inscription at upper right. Considerable retouching to the figure's clothing, much of which is visible to the naked eye. Some fine retouching to the figure's hair, and a small dot on his proper right cheek.
