A Canadian-born artist who grew up in Massachusetts, George Noyes studied art in Paris and later painted with the Hudson River School master, Frederic Church. After training at the Parisian studios of Gustave Courtois, Joseph-Paul Blanc, and Paul-Louis Delance in 1891, he began painting en plein air in the French countryside and by 1893 his work had been accepted into the Salon. Upon his return to the United States, Noyes traveled throughout New England, making plein air paintings of countryside views. Characterized by vibrant color and impressionistic brushwork, his landscapes and harbor scenes earned the artist great acclaim among both critics and collectors.
