Description

FREMONT ELLIS (American 1897-1985)
View from the Hill, 1969
Oil on masonite
30in. x 36in.
Signed and dated lower right

Born in Montana, Fremont Ellis was a renowned Western landscape painter and prominent member of the Santa Fe Art Colony. After settling in Santa Fe in 1919, he founded the pioneering artist group "Los Cinco Pintores" (Five Painters) with Jozef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Willard Nash, and Will Shuster. Ellis' paintings are characterized by vivid colors and tones that reflect the natural environment of the American West. On the reverse of View from the Hill is the artist's inscription, Sun thickened oil paint, copal medium, referring to his artistic materials and indicating that this work was painted en plein air. The visible marks of paint beyond the edge of the picture indicate that Ellis painted the work inside the frame.

A copy of an authentication by Nedra Matteucci accompanies the lot.

Provenance: Fenn Galleries, Santa Fe, NM
acquired from the above by the present owner
