Ernest Hennings was a highly recognized painter of western subjects, particularly his depiction of the New Mexican Native Americans. Born to German immigrants in New Jersey, Hennings studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before venturing west. In 1921, Hennings permanently moved to Taos and in 1924 he was elected into membership of the Taos Society of Artists. Hennings considered himself to be foremost a figure painter, however he excelled as an artist by combining the elements of figure painting with those of the New Mexico landscape painting, thus developing a unique style that distinguished him from the other Taos artists.
