In 1905 the publisher Bobbs-Merrill produced an illustrated edition of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's immensely popular, long poem Evangeline, for which Howard Chandler Christy produced thirty-two original paintings and drawings. The present lot is reproduced on page 45, facing the lines it illustrates:...Then up rose from his seat by the fireside Basil the blacksmith,/Knocked from his pipe the ashes, and slowly extending his right hand... The inscription on the verso of the original drawing, "Evangeline/opp 44," is the printer's guide to its placement in the book.
