Thomas E. Powers created this newspaper comic strip titled "Tax Payer's Parade" for publication in The New York Journal likely in the 1920s. Its timeless theme illustrates in sequential comics fashion the steps by which the typical worker's pay, even with a raise, dwindles to almost nothing by the time he has paid for food, rent, gas and taxes. The "tax collector" take his "cut" plus the young man's clothes, after which "the only thing left for him is a nudist colony."

T. E. Powers joined William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal in 1896 and created comic strips and political cartoons for nearly 40 years. His early comic strips include Our Moving Pictures, Mike and Mike, and Mr. Nobody Holme. The last was filmed as an animated cartoon. Mr. Powers was reputed to be President Theodore Roosevelt's favorite cartoonist.
