The present work is published as the cover of the Cold War-era science fiction novel Level 7 by Mordecai Roshwald (Signet, 1959), written as the diary of a man sealed in a bunker waiting to push the button that ends the world. The sense of claustrophobia and isolation that permeate the book are captured in this cover by Hoot von Zitzewitz, whose dynamic collages were a staple of paperback art in the 1960s. the present work is accompanied by a print out of the cover.


Condition Report*: Each element in the center of the work is hand painted collage element that has been applied to the board. Some lifting to center region of the collage. Minor loss to upper region element; very minor tear, possibly inherent to the work, at center left in area of black near eyeball. Bumps with some subsequent creases to the corners of the work. Wear and markings in keeping with illustration and publishing process. Not framed.
