Description
An Exceptionally Large and Important Russian Imperial Glass Pokal with the Cypher of Peter I and the State ArmsImperial Glassworks, Period of Elizabeth I Petrovna (1741-1762), circa 1745
13-3/4 x 6 inches (34.9 x 15.2 cm)
PROVENANCE:
A La Vieille Russie, New York.
The pokal is a tall goblet with a flared bowl used for ceremonial toasts, that was especially popular in central Europe between the 17th and 19th centuries. The form most likely found its way to Russia via diplomatic gifts from Bohemia, Germany, Sweden, and Venice. While the early glass in Russia at the Izmailovo factories (founded in 1668) were in the Venetian style, by the late 17th century, this style of glass had been replaced with the Bohemian taste for wheel-cut engraving and decoration which reached a high level of artistry in Russia, and became the predominating style of the Imperial Glassworks founded in the early 18th century (the date of foundation is lost, but the glassworks are noted as being under Prince Menshikov's direction as early as 1714. (Cf. Asharina, p. 15).
The offered lot comes from the apex of the production of the glassworks during the mid-18th century, when there were nine vessel cutters, all under the direction of Kuzma Zerchaninov (Asharina, p. 17). This rare surviving example still bears traces of its original gilding.
