Silver-mounted wooden objects by the Fabergé firm included everything from miniature pendants (see lot 82059), to the Imperial Eggs themselves. A design for the undelivered Imperial Egg of 1917 shows a body carved from Karelian birch, chosen to underscore wartime austerity. It has been noted that mounted wooden gifts were sometimes presented as gifts when more valuable objects might provoke comment or public dissent for their lavish nature. The offered lot may have once formed base for a silver mounted wooden vessel, or it may have been purchased independently for use beneath a pre-existing piece of glass or silver.
