Description
Six Russian Imperial Porcelain Manufactory Plates from the Tsarskoye Selo ServiceRussian Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, St. Petersburg, various dates
9-1/4 inches (23.5 cm) (each)
PROVENANCE:
Sotheby's, New York;
Prince and Princess Nikita Romanoff;
Private Collection, New York, a gift from the above.
This service "With the Coat of Arms, A Blue Stripe, and a Narrow Gold Band" was commissioned in 1840 by Nicholas I (1825-1855 for everyday use in the palaces of the Tsarskoe Selo complex), hence the frequently used name, the Tsarskoe Selo service. Examples may be seen in the exhibition catalog: Iz Serviznykh Kladovykh: Ubranstvo russkogo imperatorskogo Stola XVIII - Nachala XX Veka State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, 2016, pp. 380-381.
The Romanoffs, like many members of the emigration, took an active interest in their heritage and often "bought back" items which were formerly in the possession of the Imperial family. These plates, which bear a Sotheby's New York sticker were likely acquired in the 1980s or 1990s at auction.
