PROVENANCE:
Grand Duke George Mikhailovich;
Princess Nina Georgievna, Princess Chavchavadze;
Prince David Chavchavadze;
Doyle, New York, January 31, 2018, lot 132.

In 1907, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich and his wife, Grand Duchess Marie Georgievna celebrated the opening of their Crimean palace, "Kharaks", designed by the architect Nikolai Krasnov (Russian, 1864-1939). The residence was located near "Ai-Todor" the palace of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, and also close to the Livadia Palace of Nicholas II, which was rebuilt by Krasnov between 1908-1911.

Fabergé researcher Dmitry Krivoshey has recently discovered in the Russian archives that the offered lot was commissioned in 1914 in tandem with a brooch for Grand Duchess Maria Georgievna, also reading "Kharaks". The "his" and "her" gifts were ordered by Grand Duke George Mikhailovich. This piece was likely with effects of the Grand Duke that Grand Duchess Marie took with her when the family left Russia at the beginning of the first World War. The tie tack passed in direct descent within the family until 2018.

Heritage Auctions thanks Dmitry Krivoshey for his assistance with the research of this lot.
