Burmite with Spider InclusionBurmite
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar
0.55 x 0.48 x 0.13 inches (1.40 x 1.23 x 0.34 cm)
This specimen will appeal to collectors who appreciate unusual and rare associations in Amber. The primary inclusion is a large Mygalomorph spider-an impressive feature on its own-but it is accompanied by an even rarer find: a Harvestman (Opiliones) belonging to the suborder Cyphophthalmi. While Opiliones are seldom encountered in amber, members of Cyphophthalmi are exceptionally scarce. Commonly known as Daddy Longlegs, Opiliones are only distantly related to spiders despite their similar appearance, and their fossil record extends back more than 400 million years, earning them the title of a true "living fossil." This is a rare specimen of Cyphophthalmi specimen to ever be observed in Amber.
