Description

Amber with Scorpion Exuvium Inclusion
Burmite
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar
1.52 x 0.98 x 0.21 inches (3.87 x 2.48 x 0.53 cm)

Fossilized tree resin known as Amber comes from many localities, some of which the best known are the Dominican Republic, the Baltic Region, and Mexico. However, material out of Myanmar (formerly Burma) in Southeast Asia has become popular among collectors in recent years and can offer different inclusions given the age of the specimens, being often older than other Amber dating to the Late Cretaceous Period as much as 99 million years ago. While considered a small Amber by many counts, this contains an outstanding inclusion - a scorpion exuvium. The exuvium is a shed exoskeleton, but a nice one with a great shape, and embedded in a nice-sized oval piece with a bonus inclusion - a giant mandible from a beetle. The golden-yellowing offering is quite flat and very clear - almost a thin section example.
