Kenny Scharf emerged as a prominent figure in the 1980s East Village art scene with his colorful and cartoonish paintings and sculptures, which incorporated popular culture and science fiction elements. Influenced by the Pop Art movement of the 1960s and artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein, Scharf created his own vernacular language of anthropomorphic figures. His work reflected a fascination with space and cosmic themes and a strong influence from Japanese art and design, seen in his vibrant colors and dynamic compositions reminiscent of traditional woodblock prints. With his playful and whimsical creations, Scharf invites viewers to explore the unknown and embrace the fantastic. Scharf was included in the 1985 Whitney Biennial and again in their show "Fast Forward: Painting from the 1980s" in 2017.
