A photograph of this painting in the archives of the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary bears a caption in Davey's handwriting with the title "Steeplechasers Going to the Post - Meadow Brook." Debuting in 1883 on Long Island, the Meadow Brook Cup during the 1930s was run in part over the estate of F. Ambrose Clark, an heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune and one of his era's leading steeplechase horsemen.
