Mixed media on paper

Signed, dated, titled, and inscribed lower right: Mirage / Lucas Johnson / Houston 86

Lucas Johnson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1940, but was raised in southern California and briefly attended the University of California to study marine biology. However, Johnson's curiosity and passion extended beyond - requiring travel and adventure. Naturally, Johnson began to try and capture his world around him with paint, pencil, ink, bronze, and any other medium. A self-taught artist, Johnson landing in Mexico City in 1962 and surrounded himself with like-minded individuals such as poet Margaret Randal, composer Conlon Nancarrow, and artists Leonora Carrington and Jose Luis Cuevas. In 1973, Johnson settled in Houston and exhibited successfully at David Gallery and Moody Gallery. He would continue to gather accolades at numerous venues internationally. Edmund P. Pillsbury wrote, "Johnson became a painter to express himself first and foremost as a human being. At its core, his work is a metaphor for the social condition - an expression of an abiding preoccupation with what is human or, conversely, with what reveals a lack of humanity."
