PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF HOWARD CROW

Having studied under Olin Travis at the Dallas Institute of Art, William Lewis Lester joined the innovative and young group of Texas Regionalist and Modernist that included Jerry Bywaters and Otis Dozer called the Dallas Nine. This group would excel making Dallas one of the most dynamic centers of American Regionalism during the 1930s and 1940s. Utilizing vivid colors, strong compositions, and increasingly abstract forms to convey their ideas and feelings toward a particular subject. The results were captivating, often surrealistic.
