A Rattray & Co. 9K Gold Center Bowl Presented to the Earl & Countess of Strathmore, Dundee, Scotland, circa 1931Marks: (tree), R&CO, 375, I, 9

The waisted ovoid bowl, meandering openwork Celtic dragon-motif strapwork rim above knotted knops, strapwork with integrated knops repeats in vertical bands from waist centering coat of arms of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and motto IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI, dragon-motif continued in double handles and to domed waisted foot.
The bowl was presented to the Earl and Countess of Strathmore on the 30th of September, by a deputation of the city of Dundee in honor of their Golden Wedding Anniversary at their home, Glamis Castle. The Earl and Countess were parents to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Consort to George VI of England and Queen Mother to Elizabeth II.
Condition Report*:
Center bowl overall presents beautifully, with scattered light abrasions to exterior shoulders, with one minute push to front left panel and scattered to rear panels, minor surface and polishing scratches to interior, and slight loss of round to foot.
