PROVENANCE:
The Photographers Gallery, London;
Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1971.
While in Europe promoting their movie Trash, Andy Warhol and his "Factory Entourage" captured memories while on the tour. Warhol stands in the foreground with a presentation book, potentially "The Castles of Bavaria", with Waldfried "Consul" Barthel, who presented the book to Warhol. Barthel was president of the distribution company Constantin-Film, who was responsible for promoting the movie.
JOURNALIST BOB COLACELLO, writing in The Village Voice in March 1971, reported:
"Andy Warhol and Company, to use the hotel-desk phrase for a group which included Paul Morrissey, Joe Dallesandro, Jane Forth, Fred Hughes (Andy's all-purpose assistant, adviser, and agent), and Jed Johnson (the Factory film editor and, recently, cameraman) began their German tour on February 17 in Cologne after a stop-over in London for the opening of the Warhol retrospective at the Tate Gallery."
Andy Warhol and his Factory entourage were touring Germany to promote the opening of their film Trash. The unique Polaroids were taken during the tour and sent immediately to the newly opened The Photographers Gallery in London, where they were sold for £5 each. The current owner acquired these from The Photographers Gallery at that time.
