Description
Multi-Stone Parrot CarvingArtist: Gerd Dreher
Idar-Oberstein, Germany
This spectacular life-sized gemstone carving of a parrot exemplifies the artistry and technical mastery for which German lapidary work is celebrated. Created circa 1975 by Gerd Dreher, the sculpture captures remarkable realism and vitality, its intricate texturing and sophisticated use of color demonstrating both craftsmanship and imagination. The parrot's head and shoulders are rendered in a mosaic of fine gemstones-red and yellow Jasper, Malachite, Sodalite, and Labradorite-each chosen for its unique tone and reflective qualities, producing a vivid and lifelike plumage. The eyes, set with cabochon Rubies, imbue the bird with striking animation and presence. The parrot's 14K Yellow Gold feet are perched upon a brown banded Agate branch fitted with Silver-gilt accents and secured by a delicate 14K Gold chain, a whimsical detail symbolizing the bird's "captivity." The composition rests upon a polished square Malachite base, whose rich green hues harmonize beautifully with the parrot's plumage. Standing over 13 inches (34 cm) in height, this sculpture is a superb example of 20th-century German lapidary art-a masterful blend of realism, gemological richness, and imaginative design.
Overall Measurements: 13.50 x 5.50 x 5.25 inches (34.29 x 13.97 x 13.33 cm)
