Description

Chalcocite
Messina Mine, Musina, Vhembe District, Limpopo, South Africa

"In [sic] intergrown cluster of cm size black hexagonal crystals. I got this specimen when I sold Earl Calvert's collection for the family many years after Earl died."
- Rock H. Currier

Probably best known for its famed Ajoite and Papagoite included Quartz, the Messina Mine of South Africa has many mineralogical treasures to offer. The copper deposits at Messina are as ancient as they are large. Pipe-like deposits of copper are bound by a surrounding breccia, and have hosted human mining since ancient times. Large-scale mining did not appear in the region until the Messina Development Company opened the Messina and Spencer Mines in 1906. For over 80 years, these mines would expand and relinquish 40 million tons of ore. Most of this was Chalcopyrite, with layers of Bornite and Chalcocite concentrated towards the center of the "pipe". Mining operations at Messina ended in 1992, and Chalcocite production stopped with it. Yet, Messina continued to find fame after its closure with the discovery of Ajoite included Quartz specimens along the surface. These specimens continue to be highly prized by collectors and any material from the locality is considered a prize. The specimen comes with a historic Burminco label as well as an index card from Earl Calvert.
