This Martian meteorite weighs 126 grams and is shaped somewhat like an abstract, rocky cyclone. The piece represents NWA 13440, which was found in Algeria in 2018. The space rock from Mars is certainly rare, and this sizable specimen is the shergottite variety with gabbroic composition. Coarse-grained and exhibiting shock features, this meteorite has a dark, black fusion crust over much of the rugged exterior in contrast to greenish sections of the interior revealed from beneath. This is a relatively large specimen, especially for a Martian example, and this version has a mottled appearance over each of the many complex surfaces. This rock is rustic in nature but also represents a relatively large amount of the Planet Mars on Earth. Martian meteorites are uncommon and valued with a premium by the most serious of collectors, and this piece consists of a substantial percentage of the total known weight of NWA 13440: 310 grams.
