Description

Seymchan Meteorite Slice
Pallasite, PMG
Magadanskaya oblast', Russia - (62° 54'N, 152° 26'E)
Found: June 1967

A "meteorite's meteorite" to be sure, if ever there was such a thing, this massive and expansive center-cut slab measures just shy of an immense 27 inches (69 cm) across and weighs nearly a hefty 20 kilograms (44 pounds). This ginormous metallic slice represents one of four such slabs from a large piece weighing approximately 115 kilograms (250 pounds) purchased back in 2010 and then cut into the quartet of magnificent slices by the leading expert in the field, Marlin Cilz at the Montana Meteorite Laboratory, well-known for exceptional work in the world of meteorites. One huge Seymchan Meteorite, the iconic Pallasite from Russia that was found in 1967, the example exhibits characteristics of a "transitional" slab with primary metallic (Siderite) composition over the majority of the two sizable and smooth finished surfaces and a smattering of Olivine crystals near the edge margin of the giant offering. A prominent Widmanstätten pattern is readily visible over both colossal surface areas and features an attractive contrast of lighter silver and darker gray colors. "Blades" of the rare mineral Schreibersite are readily visible over the two expansive surfaces of this superb slab and are extremely large crystals. Confirming the level of museum-quality easily attributed to this superb specimen, one of the remaining slices referenced above is presently at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Canada, and the other two are in private hands such that this example is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity in terms of acquisition potential being the only one of the slices available on the open market. This is, unquestionably, a superior specimen of the renowned Stony-Iron coarse octahedrite.
Measurements: 26.77 x 13.58 x 0.59 inches (68.00 x 34.50 x 1.50 cm), weighs 19.8 kilograms (43.6 pounds)
