Graphite Brick CP-1
Chicago Pile -1
Site of the First Self-Sustaining Nuclear Reaction
Stagg Field - The University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois, USA

An important artifact of American scientific and military history, this encased Graphite Brick from the iconic Chicago Pile-1 is an extremely unique item that tells quite a story. This bar from "CP-1" represents material from the site of the first self-sustained nuclear reaction in history. Associated with the legendary Manhattan Project, which resulted in the development of the first atomic bomb that ultimately helped end World War II, this remnant was a part of the project literally under Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. The protected and preserved relic is affixed with a label reading "GRAPHITE FROM CP-1 - FIRST NUCLEAR REACTOR - DECEMBER 2, 1942 - STAGG FIELD - THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO" on the front. This memento measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) in length and exhibits a slight texture, dark charcoal coloration, and rectangular geometric form. A conversation starter to be sure, this item dating back more than 80 years is really something special, especially for someone who is a true aficionado of history. The Graphite rods were used to secure pieces of Uranium in place, and such segments now provide a direct connection to the birth of the "atomic age" in a most tangible way. While these can have minor residual radiation, they are deemed safe.
Overall Measurements: 3.82 x 2.64 x 1.38 inches (9.70 x 6.70 x 3.50 cm)
