Brenham Meteorite "Cool Scoops"
Pallasite, PMG-an
Kansas, USA - (37° 34' 57"N, 99° 9' 49"W)
Found: 1882

With reports of cowboys on horseback riding up and finding unusual, out of place, rocks in the buffalo grass of Kansas dating back to the late 1800s, the Brenham Meteorite has been a fascination for years. An anomalous pallasite, the find is often associated with Haviland Crater as an impact site but may just have landed in a natural depression or buffalo wallow. The rare pallasite variety consists of material of metallic nickel-iron and olivine (peridot) crystals. The Main Mass of Brenham, found in 2005 by Geoff Notkin's Meteorite Men co-star Steve Arnold and geologist Philip Mani, represents the world's largest meteorite with naturally occurring gemstone material. While not considered a witnessed fall, Native Americans may have seen the event. Legendary H.H. Nininger, who visited the Brenham strewn field, coined the term "meteorode" to describe the weathered pallasite individuals uncovered by his team. This incomparable, sculptural, individual specimen, weighing a massive 33.4 kilograms (73.6 pounds), boasts an unusually attractive shape, as opposed to most other pieces, which have been rounded by ablation during flight or weathering in the damp, clay-rich soil of Kansas, or both. Suitably nicknamed "Cool Scoops" for its exquisite exterior texture, this significant offering was found by the dynamic duo of Geoff Notkin and his Meteorite Men co-star Steve Arnold. While not found on camera, the specimen was unearthed from burial deep in a Kansas field. In addition to an excellent shape, the huge meteorite is rich in olivine and exhibits superlative features for Brenham. A signed copy of Notkin's popular book Rock Star accompanies this offering. This is one large and spectacular piece of the iconic pallasite.
Measurements: 12.60 x 10.63 x 7.87 inches (32.00 x 27.00 x 20.00 cm), weighs 33.4 kilograms (73.63 pounds)
