Description
Juancheng MeteoriteChondrite, H5
Shandong, China - (35° 30'N, 115° 25'E)
Witnessed Fall: February 15, 1997, 23:23:35 Beijing time (15:23:35 U.T.)
The Juancheng Meteorite represents an important Chinese witnessed fall that coincidentally occurred on the same date, albeit 16 years earlier, as the Chelyabinsk superbolide that exploded over Siberia in 2013. The H5 Chondrite produced many stones, of which most were small, unlike this rather large piece weighing 169.5 grams. This fine example offers excellent fusion crust, good ablation shape, and several other appealing attributes. The rocky form looks a bit like a small dinosaur vertebra, from some angles, given the unique shape of the space rock, adding an additional dimension to the highly appealing stone.
Measurements: 2.54 x 1.81 x 1.78 inches (6.45 x 4.60 x 4.51 cm), weighs 169.5 grams
Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
