Description

Plainview Meteorite
Chondrite, H5
Plainview, Hale County, Texas, USA
Found: 1917

Texas meteorites are more significant than many may think and were of great interest to several legends of meteoritics, including Oscar Monnig and Harvey H. Nininger, who recovered some of the best specimens first published by George Merrill shortly after the initial find in 1917. Nininger visited that site years later and recovered numerous specimens even though he had been discouraged by other scientists who felt it would not be productive. This outstanding sample weighing 269.5 grams represents the Plainview which is one of the larger American meteorites ever found in terms of weight. This complete individual has lots of shallow regmaglypts, wonderful fusion crust, and is slightly orientated. The magnificent sculptural rock is hand-painted with Harvey H. Nininger collection number "92.658" and also has its 'original' weight of 271 grams below the labeling. An outstanding historical piece, this has an exceptional natural form, superior texture, and documented history.
Measurements: 2.87 x 2.49 x 1.90 inches (7.28 x 6.33 x 4.82 cm), weighs 269.5 grams

Provenance: Ex. Harvey H. Nininger Collection #92.658, The Geoff Notkin Collection
