This rustic mass of NWA 15581 is dark in color, and granular in texture, with what appears to be a "nose cone" shape. Crusted in a most rugged way, this Carbonaceous Chondrite, CK5, weighs a respectable 407.8 grams, representing a large portion of that meteorite, which has a Total Known Weight of just 1,577 grams. Found in 2000, this was purchased from a local Malian dealer. This is no typical example, with a very rocky and noteworthy burned appearance. This material contains porphyritic chondrules in a fine-grained matrix. The Carbonaceous Chondrite variety of meteorites offers scientific value relating to the formation of the rocky planets and the origins of life on Earth.
