Description

Glorieta Mountain Meteorite Slice - 86.5 Grams
Pallasite, PMG-an
New Mexico, USA - (35° 36'N, 105° 48'W)
Found: 1884

Relatively thick, yet still highly translucent, this sizable, irregular slab of fabled Glorieta Mountain Meteorite features exceptionally large golden-brown and greenish-yellow Olivine crystals, which cover the substantial surface area of this truly glorious Pallasite. Weighing 86.5 grams, this PMG has been designated anomalous. The Stony-Iron was first found near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the strewn field is near both the sites of the Battle of Glorieta Pass and the Santa Fe Trail, so even musket balls, buttons, and other historical artifacts are found in the location as well. Discovered back in 1884, the pallasitic variety has long been a favorite of serious collectors, and examples of Glorieta Mountain are not often seen for sale. At some 4 inches (10 cm) across, this piece is both visually impressive and rather substantial in size. The ratio of crystallization to metallic matrix on this thick slab is extremely high. This is a fine collectible representation of a very iconic meteorite. Pallasites, of course, amount to less than 200 of some 71,000 classified meteorite varieties.
Measurements: 4.12 x 2.67 x 0.14 inches (10.46 x 6.78 x 0.35 cm), weighs 86.5 grams

Provenance: Private Pacific Northwest Collection #04-23, Ex. Edwin Thompson
