Description

Springwater Meteorite Slice - 187.9 Grams
Pallasite, PMG-an
Springwater, Saskatchewan, Canada - (52° 0'N, 108° 18'W)
Found: 1931

Examples of the Springwater Pallasite are very limited in private hands, so it is quite uncommon to see pieces come up for sale. Found by famers plowing their field in 1931, near Saskatoon, Canada in the Saskatchewan Province, three large masses were unearthed. Identified by legendary Harvey Nininger, the Stony-Iron Pallasite typically exhibits small, round crystals of Olivine, and most slabs are not translucent due to being cut thick like this offering weighing 188 grams. The rustic, irregular slab is covered in crystals, has a rugged edge, and displays both a tiny label with collection number "167" as well as a handwritten label on a piece of yellowed masking tape. The meteorite consists of the Kamacite and Taenite phases in addition to the crystallization, and a very large specimen found back in 2009 is now at the Royal Ontario Museum and is considered a Canadian National Treasure.
Measurements: 3.62 x 2.78 x 0.39 inches (9.20 x 7.07 x 0.98 cm), weighs 187.9 grams
