Description

Fossil Comorant
Phalacrocor filyawi
Pliocene
Richardson Formation
Sarasota County, Florida, USA

This rare avian fossil consists of a disarticulated assemblage of phenomenal bones that have been put in a non-native matrix for display. The brown bones are in beautiful condition preserving even the smallest of details as its original matrix would not have been strong enough to hold the bones in place for display so a lightweight but sturdy backing was employed to do the job and contrast sharply with the dark bone. The fossil material evidences minimal repairs and has an interesting backstory as the variety of specimen were all found in a single coastal locality in loose shell fragments indicating the bird may have run into a natural disaster - namely, a hurricane - and gotten caught as a flock in a storm and perished as a result.
