Description

Cape York Meteorite Slice
Iron, IIIAB
Greenland
Found: 1818

The obvious significance of this geometric meteorite slice is the fact that it measures 14.5 inches (37 cm) at the maximum dimension. It also weighs a substantial 1,945 grams. This rectangular metallic wonder is an example of the Cape York, one of the largest known Iron meteorites with Total Known Weight of 58.2 tons. Also known as the Innaanganeq, the octahedrite fell in Greenland and was first discovered in 1818. This fine specimen exhibits a complete, complex, and intricate Widmanstätten patterning, over a display surface that also features two Troilite inclusions. An inherent contrast of the taupe brown mineral spots against the cross-hatched metallic piece provides an added dimension of intrigue. The Agpalilik stone, a fourth major piece of the meteorite discovered, and named for the locality where it was found, is of the most interesting historical significance, as it was known to local Inuit peoples for centuries with the Iron from the meteorite being used as a source for making tools. This specimen is from "The Man" Main Mass which is on display in the Geological Museum of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. This tremendous IIIAB offers an immense size, a complex appearance, and a wonderful story, not to mention the Arctic locality of Northwest Greenland.
Overall Measurements: 14.57 x 7.87 x 0.15 inches (37.00 x 20.00 x 0.37 cm), weighs 1,945 grams

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
