Description

Fluorite and Calcite
Denton Mine, Harris Creek Mining Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
13.7 x 12.0 x 8.3 cm (5.40 x 4.71 x 3.25 in)

This assortment of beautifully modified, Calcite crystals are very large and perched nicely on top of sharply formed Fluorite cubes. The largest of the Calcite crystals reaches up 5.1 centimeters. Each Calcite crystal has a rich, golden-yellow color and nice glassy luster. The small scatterings of minor Calcite and Chalcopyrite growths make the Fluorite on the display side dazzle under illumination. Although the Calcite is quite breathtaking, the true star of this piece is the Fluorite. Extremely pronounced, cubic crystals make up the entirety of the matrix. The display view and the underside of the specimen show very rich purple hues-even more so on the bottom-accompanied by subtle but defined colorless and purple zoning. Between the two purple layers is a small but noticeable seam of sky blue Fluorite crystals. There are some minor bruising and scuffs on the Calcite crystals. Very light damages on the Fluorite are present on the frontmost crystal and a couple on the left side of the specimen. Other damages are mainly consolidated to the rear view of the specimen.
