Description

Aquamarine
Shigar Valley, Shigar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
7.7 x 6.9 x 4.7 cm (3.01 x 2.73 x 1.85 in)

This Aquamarine specimen from the Shigar Valley has a unique aesthetic: the dozens of thin Aquamarine prisms have all grown acicularly from a single origin point, creating a dynamic "spray" of gemmy, shining crystals that blossom into a powder blue flower. The crystals are prismatic and transparent, with the largest and front-most crystals being glass-clear, as well as glassy in luster. The color is light blue (especially pronounced down the c-axes) and there is a bright white matrix of Albite and minor associated Muscovite on the back. The most obvious detail in this specimen are the prolific and contrasting inclusions of Schorl, or "black tourmaline," which are scattered all throughout the canopy of the Aquamarine cluster, as well as the origin point at the base. The backside has incomplete crystals, and there is some chipping on a few terminations.
