Woolly Mammoth Tusks

Woolly Mammoth Tusk
Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska, USA

When it comes to Woolly Mammoth Tusks, color is often one of, if not the most, critical aspects of the collectability of any specimen. In this case, the "replacement" of the organic material with the mineral Vivianite has resulted in an abundant and vibrant coloration characterizing this enormous example measuring 71 inches (180 cm) on the curve. Aptly considered a "Big Blue" for the obvious amount of blue hue over the twisting and polished surface of this elongated incisor tooth, which is indeed what tusks actually represent scientifically, such tusks grow continuously during the life of the animal, and this tusk out of the Pleistocene of Alaska is a true stunner. Presented on a custom Missouri Black Walnut base that allows for a dramatic display in vertical orientation, the enormous offering, weighing nearly 27.6 pounds (12.5 kilograms), certainly represents one significant amount of fossilized ivory. Expertly prepared for maximum display impact, this tusk has expected evidence of crack fill, and there are variations in the exterior. The combination of size and color makes this a special example, and the slender form of the tusk indicates it being from a female Woolly Mammoth. In terms of any complete tusks from Mammuthus primigenius, this is one spectacular display piece.
Overall Measurements: 58.00 x 28.00 x 23.00 inches (147.32 x 71.12 x 58.42 cm)
