Description
Heteromorph Ammonite FossilDidymoceras biosidium
Upper Cretaceous
Pierre Shale, Cheyenne River Area
Pennington County, South Dakota, USA
There are not enough adjectives to accurately describe this crazy and surreal fossil, which represents a heteromorph Ammonite. Unlike other varieties of ancient cephalopod, heteromorphs do not show the tight coiling structures so associated with the classification. This 'alien-looking' Didymoceras is partially coiled like a snake or worm around an impressive ball of rocky matrix with one appealing bluish-purple iridescence. A rare and unusual fossil to say the least, this example exhibits expected reconstruction to the early whorls and restoration to the spines. A second fossil of Oxybeloceras is the bonus, and such a fabulous representation of this type of Ammonite is not often seen. This is a true wonder in fine shape.
