This classic painting formerly decorated the New Jersey home of artist, Stanley Meltzoff.

The work was published as the cover for This Very Earth by Erskine Caldwell, Signet Books #838, 1951. A copy of the paperback accompanies this lot.

It was subsequently reproduced on p. 106 of The Paperback Art of James Avati by Piet Schreuders and Kenneth Fulton, Donald M. Grant Publisher, Inc., 2005.

Condition Report*: There appears to be an uneven varnish layer throughout; some areas with possible surface dirt, particularly visible in the white painted margins; minor abrasions visible in woman's hair, in male figure, and along the bottom of the image; upper left margin's corner has some paint loss; a few tiny pinholes near upper extreme edge.  Framed to an overall size of 28.75 x 20 inches.
