Description

Elbaite var. Indicolite (Gem Quality)
Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan
10.2 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm (4.01 x 0.40 x 0.34 in)
18 grams

Arguably, the most important qualities of any Elbaite is color and transparency, both of which are exemplified to a high degree in this sleek single crystal. At 10 centimeters in length, it is surprising that this specimen hasn't been repaired or restored in any way, but in fact, it is in its completely intact, natural state. The prism of the crystal has a remarkably consistent and deep color, a bright ocean green-blue hue, which qualifies this specimen for the varietal/trade name of Indicolite, a name designated to Elbaite specimens that have a particularly rich blue color. Indicolite is famous for making gorgeous gemstones and jewelry; in fact, it is remarkable that this crystal was never used as cutting rough for gemstones. We can be grateful for this, as it is rare to find natural, crystallized specimens of this clarity and gemminess. The end of the crystal is slightly rough but terminated, and the prism is nearly perfect save for near-microscopic chatter.
