Description
Seymchan Transitional Meteorite SlicePallasite, PMG
Magadanskaya oblast', Russia (62° 54'N, 152° 26'E)
Found: June 1967
Transitional slices show features of both Pallasites and siderites (Iron Meteorites). Rather than a homogenous distribution of 50% Nickel-Iron and 50% Olivine, which is typical in Pallasites, this extraordinary large, full slice displays large swaths of Nickel-Iron, speckled with clusters of Olivine. As the molten core of a large asteroid cools, Pallasites may form in the zone where the core meets the mantle, and transitional slices bear stark witness to the forces at work within the Asteroid Belt. Only an active body could produce this type of material. This full slice comes from the center of a large mass weighing approximately 80 lbs. (36 kg). Two experts have described this as "one of the finest transitional Pallasites known." Note the excellent etched Widmanstätten Pattern, composed of interlocking bands of the Nickel-Iron alloys Kamacite and Taenite.
Overall Measurements: 9.41 x 6.10 x 0.31 inches (23.90 x 15.50 x 0.80 cm), weighs 1.18 kg (2.61 lbs.)
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
