A Large Bobo Plank Mask
Burkina Faso, 20th century

Wood with black, white, and reddish-brown natural pigments. The face a stylized owl or nighttime flying creature of the "bush" (the world of wild spirits). The forms of the plank rising above suggest the wings, body and tail of the bird. The front and back are covered with traditional geometric designs, especially vibrant on the front.
