A Cocle Gold Pendant
Panama, c. 800 - 1200 AD

Two standing figures distinguished by large bird beaks strapped to their faces. Their hands directed forward with palms out (two broken off, one extant, one missing). Loop at back for suspension. Cast in tumbaga gold alloy. In fair condition, proper left foot of left figure broken off but is extant, this figure also missing left arm and hand and one of the crescents of the headdress. The figure on the right has its proper right hand broken off but it too is extant. Loss of surface gold from erosion, especially on back, exposing the underlying black and copper-colored metals.
