An Unusually Large and Fine Chancay Urn, chucimilco
Peru, c. 1000-1450 AD

At 23 1/2 inches high, one of the largest and most artistic we've seen. Finely sculptured from creamy tan earthenware with chocolate brown slips. The figure sits with knees raised, holding a small beaker (kero) to its front. the body painted brown with a wide segmented collar or necklace. The head has large circular ear ornaments and skillfully painted facial paint in a step design enclosing and eye on the cheeks, a rectangle over the mouth and chin, and darts at the corner of the eyes. It wears a wide headband with notched flanges. In very good condition, slight scuffing to the proper right leg surface, intact, no visible repairs or restorations.
