A Waura (aka Wauja) Painted Wood Mask
Upper Xingu river region, Mata Grosso, Brazil, c. 20th century

An oval wood plank painted on one side in black and white in a design representing a mythological creature. A long palm grass mantle attached to one end. In good condition, stable crack at top and bottom. Accompanied by two wood pointed dance wands painted with black bands and dots.

Height: mask, 26 ½ inches; dance wands, 23 and 24 ½ inches
