A Cocle Gold Disc
Panama, c. 700-1400 AD

A fairly thick sheet of gold alloy (tumbaga) cut and embossed with the image of a composite reptile and amphibian, having the warty body of a toad or crocodile with serpents curling out from its mouth and tail. The circular disc trimmed with embossed stipples. Perforated four times at the top for attachment. In good condition, a half-inch hairline crack at mouth.
