Description

A Nazca Panel
South Coastal Peru, circa 300-600 AD

Back panel woven in natural brown camelid wool fibers with attached figure created by cross-knit looping in white and red wool. The figure is a stylized and geometrically rendered composite of a monkey / human viewed frontally, with a linear headdress, four fingers to each hand and three toes to each foot. The lightning bolt zigzags - probably representing tails - to the sides, plus the jocular face and ecstatic posture give this panel a lively visual impression. A cross-knit figure of this size and quality is extremely rare, possibly unique. In very good condition, some stains, a few areas of loss and areas where the cross-knit figure has become detached; an area of restoration on the lower left side; right foot appears to be reconstructed with original pieces. Mounted in a wood and acrylic display frame.
